What is Rectal Prolapse?

Prolapse means slipping. So, rectal prolapse is a protrusion of rectal tissue. This can be felt as a lump outside the anus.

Rectal prolapse is more common among women than men. It also becomes more common as people age.

Often, a noticeable symptom is a mucous discharge. There might also be some issues with faecal continence. Another common symptom is the sensation of protruding tissue.

Treatment for Rectal Prolapse

When someone is experiencing rectal prolapse, the first treatment step is to bulk up the stool. This is done through a diet with higher soluble fibre. Pelvic floor physiotherapy can also be helpful at this stage.
